Midnight In A Perfect World

Today, KEXP announces the launch of “Midnight in an Perfect World,” a weekly hour-long guest DJ show airing Fridays at midnight.  This new multi-genre program adds to the weekend vibe already established by KEXP’s Michele Myers and DJ Alex, while featuring eclectic sets by a rotating cast of DJ’s from Seattle and beyond.

“We are always looking for ways to get more voices and more music on the air,” said John Richards, host of KEXP’s Morning Show and architect of “Midnight in a Perfect World.” “This show will open up KEXP’s airwaves to the best local and international DJs so they can bring their mixes to our audience and give our listeners a taste of what top DJs are playing in Seattle.

“Midnight in a Perfect World” will debut at midnight on Friday, February 21, with a live set by Seattle’s Nordic Soul, DJ Sean Horton, founder of Decibel Festival, an international festival of electronic music and visual arts based in Seattle.

“Since landing in Seattle in 1995, KCMU/KEXP has been a consistent source of music discovery,” said Sean Horton. “Their support of local music and arts has been vital to many of the projects I’ve been involved in. It’s been a pleasure watching KEXP expand their reach and I look forward to continuing the partnership we’ve shared going back to 2004. KEXP for life!”

So far, KEXP has booked DJs through early May. After Nordic Soul, the lineup includes Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard (2/28), Sophisticated Mama resident DJ Nitty Gritty (3/7), Portland producer DJ Gigs/Natasha Kmeto (3/14), Scottish DJ Twitch of Optimo (3/21), President Bongo of Icelandic group Gus Gus (3/28), +Plus resident DJ Miss Shelrawka (4/3), Seattle producer Lusine(4/18), New York’s Ursula 1000/Alex Gimeno, and Long Beach, California’sYppah/Joe Corrales Jr. (5/8).

The name of the show is based on a DJ Shadow song title. “We’ve played “Midnight in a Perfect World” for years and “Endtroducing” is a groundbreaking record,” said Richards. “I love the connection to the vibe and title of the song to the show.”

KEXP has hosted over 400 live performances each year for the past several years, primarily bands. This new show will elevate live DJ sets to treat them like in-studio sessions and provide a new venue for KEXP to feature top DJs. Consistent with KEXP’s curatorial philosophy, all DJs will be free to choose their own music. The show will feature a mix of live and pre-recorded DJ sets. It will be hosted by DJ Alex and co-produced by John Richards and DJ Alex.

As KEXP looks forward to moving into our New Home and opening our doors to a range of public programming, we can envision a day where we would have this mix live in the Gathering Space for listeners experience first-hand.

“Midnight in a Perfect World” will be available on-demand from the archive available at www.kexp.org.
